Daily Creative Musings #2 Sharpen Your Ideas

September 26, 2018

Yes, that was my workspace yesterday after I cheerfully arrived home from a most satisfying purchase of my first metal desktop sharpener and some pencils. I started sharpening like there was no tomorrow and I literally treated all my pencils with a new pointy “haircut”. As you all know, using the right tools can make a huge difference in your work. I was reminded of that yesterday. I want to personally thank botanical artist and designer –and my teacher!– Jenny Haslimeier for showing me a new way to make art. I was eager then to start using my newly sharpened pencils on the onions and garlics illustration!

Venturing Recipe Illustration

August 26, 2018

When I was commissioned with my first illustrated recipe I had to figure out the best way to showcase my artwork and, at the same time, visually –and beautifully– interpret a dish that someone had entrusted me with. Whether you are doing it for yourself or for a client, in this post I would like to cover up the process that took for me to find the best way to accomplish that and also other considerations and inspiration that I found extremely helpful. There are many different approaches and angles to go over illustrating a recipe but this is just my own.

I finally got back to this apricot piece after failed attempts (swipe to see) at painting it with watercolours 🎨
It is still not finished but this is the one that at least can look at without scratching my eyeballs.
In all seriousness, I feel I need more practice with papers (this one is hot pressed Daler Rowney) and paints (still using my Kuretake box). What is your biggest challenge this week?
Wishing you all a delicious weekend as I reminisce of the fabulous Esterházy torte that we had in Salzburg two years ago 🍰 I still dream of those glorious cakes... This one we had at Café Glockenspiel at Mozartplatz (swipe to see), what a treat!

Any special dessert that you remember from your travels?

Thank you all for your recent purchases in my #Society6 shop, specially of the print “Cucumber & Mint” 🥒🌼🌱 So happy!

For those of you who haven’t checked it out yet, there’s a link in my profile!
Hello! I hope you are all having a lovely weekend, here’s my first finished illustration of 2019, though I originally started it last December.

It’s been a much needed break that enabled me to finish this (correct me if I am wrong) “sweet dumpling” pumpkin 🎃 the way I wanted as it was a challenging piece for me. I used exclusively coloured pencils and tried to make colour as vibrant as I could. 🖍 Caran d’Ache - Pablo + Prismacolor.
Slowly getting back to work with these sliced eggplant for a recipe illustration 🍆

I wish everyone an easy and lenient January!
Last post of 2018 is another more personal compilation of this year’s artwork 🍒

It’s been a tough one, 2018. One of those years that really makes you evolve and also be more appreciative and grateful.
I am wishing you all a splendid 2019, may it be the year all in which all our efforts are rewarded and we get to share it all with the ones we love.

Sincerely,
Miriam
Pancakes and avocados! Not bad for my best nine of 2018 🥑 It’s been a great and challenging year and I am very grateful, let’s see what 2019 brings! I want to thank everyone for your support, for everything I learnt, for long-time friends, new friends and specially my mum.

I hope you all have a fabulous time during the holidays and all the best for the new year! See you in 2019 🎉
Last update on this piece as I am about to head back home for the holidays ✨

Wishing you all a great weekend!
